Lido degli Scacchi
It is said that at the end of the year 1509, the Republic of Venice wanted to punish the expansionism of the House of Este with an attack from the river to the Duchy of Ferrara. In Polesella, on the Po river banks, a bloody confrontation took place: the militia from Ferrara gained the battle crushingly, while the majority of the venetian boats sank because of guns, culverins, mortars and muskets, stationed on the river banks.
After the victory Mr Arveda, a gunner from Polesella faithful to Duke Alfonso I D’Este, was nominated Cavaliere degli Scacchi (knight of the chess), probably for the strategy he used in placing the artillery. He was given a woodland, the old Bosco Eliceo, between Borgo della Fontana (now San Giuseppe) and Magnavacca. Here, in Borgo degli Scacchi, the first people set themselves up, and all around vineyards stretched up. The Bosco Eliceo wine was produced in this area until a few decades ago.
Lido degli Scacchi had its urban development with the economic boom of the sixties, like the other Lidos.

Every year, on August 8th, costume parades and masked floats are made to celebrate Lido degli Scacchi’s birthday.
Lido degli Scacchi is also an ideal base for lots of excursions in the picturesque park of the Po Delta and Comacchio's Lagoons, for cultural visits to towns such as the beautiful Comacchio and many picturesque places like the Abbey of Pomposa and Mesola Castle.
